"Seems to be trickier to get these to grow than I'd hoped. We had the soil prepped, watered faithfully, but I think our location wasn't sunny enough despite almost full sun? We only had a few plants even start to grow and despite blocking off the area (not totally deer proofed) the deer came in and annihilated those poor babies anyway."
"I've planted several pounds in meadow settings with varying results (less than hoped for to beyond wildest expectations). Site should be prepared via slight raking and eliminating competition by once mowing very low or by "weeding," seed MUST be watered heavily for 30+ days & planted in very SUNNY area to assist germination. No fertilizer first year! Get 'em growing the first year and they'll establish and naturalize for years to come. Spectacular!"
Our Lupine Seed Mix includes 5 famous lupine varieties, both annual and perennial. Annuals grow, flower, and set seed over the course of one year. If conditions are favorable in your garden, the plants may reseed. Perennials will return year after year from the same root system, providing blooms for many seasons to come!
Why We Love Lupines
A note on growing Lupinus: Lupinus perennis is the sole larval host plant for the Karner Blue Butterfly, a federally endangered species with remaining populations in New Hampshire, New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio. This seed is open-pollinated, therefore populations growing alongside other species will easily hybridize. These hybrids can no longer support the Karner Blue.
To help protect Karner Blue Butterfly habitat, we do not recommend planting in the following active recovery states: NY, NH, IN, IL OH, MN, WI, MI or Ontario, CA.
